Our SHINE Program seeks to support gifted and talented students, their teachers and families, to understand them as learners and to strategically develop their gifts into talented outcomes.

What is the SHINE Program?

At Hume Anglican Grammar, we believe that all students are entitled to receive the support and challenge necessary to help them develop holistically and reach their full potential. 

We recognise the importance of identifying a wide range of abilities and talents, and providing opportunities to nurture them. In addition, we are committed to developing students’ social and emotional skills as essential elements in the development of the whole person. 

Our definition of ability includes academic and practical performance, as well as students who show outstanding artistic, musical and creative talent, physical skills, leadership qualities and the ability to process ideas and information. 

Our SHINE Program seeks to support gifted and talented students, their teachers and families, to understand them as learners and to strategically develop their gifts into talented outcomes.

Identifying Gifted and Talented Students

Identifying highly able students results from data collected through both standardised testing and characteristics checklists, including achievement and ability testing; and intellectual, social and emotional characteristics as identified by teachers and parents, recognising gifted achievers as a potentially significant part of the student population. (The Australian Association for the Education of the Gifted and Talented - AAEGT). 

Gifted and Talented students can account for up to 10% of a school’s population (Gagne’s Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent).
