Key to Success
At an assembly earlier this term, off the back of the Commonwealth Games, I spoke to Secondary students about success. I referenced some of the great moments that have stuck with me from sporting events – moments that have demonstrated incredible courage, persistence or character. During my speech I also referred to an article by Darius Foroux I had read some time ago in Business Insider. The article was titled ’10 Habits of Weak, Unsuccessful People You Should Try to Avoid.’
Foroux suggests that the surest way to find success is to avoid being unsuccessful and that unsuccessful people:
- Are always distracted
- Only talk the talk
- Spend time with “losers”
- Hate everything
- Procrastinate
- Don’t listen to others
- Are lazy
- Don’t learn
- Are not nice
- Are quitters
Of course, the article does explain these characteristics in greater detail and often ends up focussing on the positive or flip side of each of these. My challenge to the students was to consider if they demonstrated any of the characteristics above and if so, what they could do about it.
Success means different things to different people, but simple choices we make every day can lead us down the path to success and therefore the key to success is in our hands.
