Whose Responsibility Is It?
Last week in Assembly, Year 1s presented their learning. I shared with our students that one of my most favourite things to do is to learn. So, hearing about learning in Assembly is fabulous.
I asked the students, where do we learn? They told me that we learn in the classroom, in the playground, at home, in the library, in the art room. We decided that we can learn anywhere. I asked the students; how do we learn? They told me by listening, by talking, by playing, by reading, by experimenting, by asking questions, by cooperating, by sharing, by doing and by creating. We decided that there are many more ways to learn that we haven’t even mentioned. Then I asked the students, whose responsibility is it to learn?
Our wonderful teachers are here to prompt, promote, question, challenge, guide and instruct. But it is the responsibility of our students to actually do the learning. Our children learn responsibility by having responsibility. At first our children have responsibility for small things, but we as the adults in their lives need to ensure that we hand over more responsibilities as they grow older. This can be hard to navigate as a parent. What do I hand over and when? A useful resource to answer those questions and to give age appropriate guidance is the following website: Age Appropriate Chores | Focus on the Family Australia (families.org.au)
If you would like to support your child’s learning, start with handing over responsibility at home.
