Floods and God

Victoria's recent floods have shattered many communities, resulting in a slow-down of life due to the immobility caused by blocked roads and other damages. Forecasts of further dangerous weather conditions may cause many of us to experience worry and concern about what may lay ahead.

While the Bible speaks about God as a powerful and sovereign Ruler, who has control over nature and everything in the universe, we might ask, then why He must have allowed such chaos? Why do people have to suffer floods and climatic challenges? Why can’t He control the situation before it gets worse?

Friends, I think here, we must remember that God, the Sovereign Ruler has shared equal custodianship of the nature with humans. In the book of Genesis chapter 1:28 we read, ‘God blessed Adam and Eve and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’

Thus, under the Sovereignty of God, we humans must play our role wisely. Sadly, we have fallen short as we continue to contribute to the ecological crisis.

However, let us remember, God is the Creator, all-powerful and will never abandon us. Let us learn to focus less on ourselves and the problems that we are facing, but remember the Creator himself. He has given this earth to us and made us partners in preserving it. He has the power to turn the disorder into order. He journeys with us in this very situation.
