Supporting Learning at Home

This week the Kalkallo and Donnybrook students have participated in RACV Safety Squad, a safety education program for Victorian Primary schools. According to the Australian Curriculum, students need to be able to recognise situations and opportunities to promote their own health.

Students identified some of the hazards in the home. They found signs in the home and the community that warn them about hazards. They learned how to be safe as a pedestrian and as a passenger. They discovered the reasons that they should sit in the back seat of the car, on a booster seat until they are 145cm tall. All students then measured themselves to discover how tall they are. Above all students learned that they have choices to make over their own safety.

Supporting learning at home includes encouraging our students to share their learning. Ask your child, “What did you learn about passenger safety?” Encouraging our students to make choices to ensure that they are safe includes listening when they choose not to sit in the front seat. Listening to our students when they suggest they need a booster seat. Empowering our students to take action on their learning and to make a change as a result demonstrates to us all that learning is real, authentic and working!
