Forging America – Year 12 Hamilton Excursion
VCE History: Revolutions allows students to study and engage with fascinating elements to human history, with a specific focus at Hume Anglican Grammar on the American and Russian Revolutions. Fortunately for the students partaking in Revolutions this year, ‘Hamilton’ provided an exciting opportunity to see learning come to life. On Friday, 3 June, the 6 ‘Revs’ students and their teacher were lucky enough to attend the musical. Omar recounts the experience below:
As part of our Unit 3 History: Revolutions studies, our class went to Her Majesty’s Theatre on Friday, 3 June to watch the ‘Hamilton’ production. ‘Hamilton’ is a Broadway hip-hop historical musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and is based on the American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. This show was only first brought to Australian audiences in 2021.
Our class were mesmerised by the way in which the actors and ensemble moved on the stage and how fluently the show worked. Our favourite character was by far King George III because of his humorous songs and dialogue. We also loved the ways in which the songs moved from one to another, but still managed to give a single unified story. By the end of the three-and-a-half-hour show, we had already wanted to see it again.
‘Hamilton’ explores pre-revolution and post-revolution in America. We were able to connect our knowledge from class for the first part of the show, with this knowledge then being extended beyond what we learnt in class, allowing us to grow our understanding and evaluation of the American Revolution.
