The Girl Power in Engineering and IT program is a four-year initiative tailored towards Australian Secondary school girls with interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program provides work experience and mentoring opportunities within the University of Melbourne's engineering and IT faculties.

This year, out of 40 total spots available, we are thrilled to announce that two students from Hume Anglican Grammar have been selected for the program: Year 9 students Salma and Mannat.

The program begins with a four-day camp in July, where the students will be introduced to various engineering and IT areas of study through interactive workshops. By exposing girls to these fields, the program aims to combat the gender imbalance that exists within the engineering and IT industries. The program also connects students with female mentors and role models in science, technology, engineering, and maths, enabling them to grow their own network of like-minded girls.

Mannat expressed her excitement about the opportunity to socialise with other girls who share her interests. “I am also really looking forward to meeting female university students studying Information Technology. I have a really strong interest in the subject and would like to expand my understanding further. I applied for the program for this reason.”

Salma is excited about the endless possibilities in engineering and IT. “There’s always more to discover and this really motivates me!”

With initiatives like this, we could be on the brink of a gender revolution in these fields, and Salma and Mannat are leading the way!
