“Rockstar Readers” is a new series of articles where we will highlight the fabulous avid readers in our library. To kick off this series, we sat down with Year 10 student Jaismeen Thind, who shared where her love of reading started, “The books that turned me into an avid reader were the Geronimo Stilton series. These were the first books I read in year two that got me stuck into reading.” 

When explaining to us how reading widely and voraciously has helped her academically, Jaismeen explained that, “Reading has expanded my imagination and the way I look at things. So, in English when we do a creative piece, I know how a story is written and how to really captivate the audience.”

Our conversation turns to the benefits of reading on not only academic results, but also wellbeing, “Reading gives me an opportunity to escape into a new world away from reality which really calms me down. It is also a very peaceful hobby.”  

Strong and courageous characters also have a profound impact on readers: “Hermione Granger's character has really captivated me, when we look at her personality and her perspective of the world,” Jaismeen explains.

It is clear that with Jaismeen’s thirst for knowledge, commitment to learning and love of reading that she is ready to do incredible things throughout her life that benefit the community and the world. So, what books does she recommend for students who are looking to start off on their independent reading journey? “I would recommend the Geronimo Stilton and Thea Stilton series for younger readers; for older readers I recommend the Harry Potter and the Tomorrow series. There are many books that I would recommend, but if I name them all it will take a whole day to write down the list!'

“The biggest advice I can give to readers at Hume Anglican Grammar is to become avid readers, and to read novels from a whole different range. Don't read the same style and same themed novels. This will give you a new perspective and new imaginations every time you read. Therefore, you will be waiting for your next adventure.”
