In preparation for the Primary school Illuminate NextGen Challenge, our Year 6 Shine students were afforded the opportunity to work alongside our Year 11 Business and Accounting students. The focus of the lesson was cost volume profit analysis, whereby the students were taught elements of excel and business acumen. The photos and responses from the students encapsulate the excitement and engagement that was had by all. Here’s to another triumph at the NextGen challenge!
“With the help of the knowledgeable Year 11s, we attempted to use Microsoft Excel to make a spreadsheet and calculate the profit of a hypothetical business. We did this in the hopes of gaining expertise about business for our target of making it into the Illuminate program. I absolutely loved going over to the Secondary school and I learnt a lot. This experience enhanced my mindset and filled me with excitement about going to Secondary school. Thank you to Mr Dass and the VCE class for this magnificent experience and fantastic lesson.” - Joshua Costanzo
“In the excel activity we had to use a formula to help a business owner find out how many products he needs to sell to break even. We learned that using excel makes using formulas in business really easy. What I personally learned from this experience is that accounting may look extremely hard but with the right tools and mindset it can be really easy once you wrap your head around the concept of complicated formulas. The experience was really helpful for the upcoming Illuminate NextGen competition.” - Abhijot Singh
“We found that it wasn’t hard at all and learned that if we put our minds to it, it would be very easy.” - Hamza Javed
“We learnt what it meant to "break-even" and the formula to solve how much of the item you are selling to make the desired profit. We also learnt about fixed cost and variable costs and how this contributes to your loss. This lesson helped me learn about the financial aspect of a businesses. I would definitely love to do this lesson again.” - Shreya Sewgoolam
