While students engage in remote learning, the Library has been busy processing many beautiful new books to add to the collection. A focus this year was to purchase a copy of every book on the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year Awards notable list, for each campus.
The CBCA Book of the Year Awards was established in 1946; the non-profit aims to celebrate Australian children’s literature, assuring the scope and vitality of children’s books. The books that make it on the list are judged by a panel of literacy experts to be of high literary and artistic quality.
CBCA’s mission is to “promote and advocate for the sharing of quality literature for young people across Australia. [They] showcase Australian creators and collaborate widely to foster a love of reading.” This is a mission for which we at the Library support wholeheartedly, as we see how a strong reading practice improves both academic outcomes and wellbeing.
We are looking forward to Book Week (21-27 August) when we can spend focused time celebrating books and highlighting the importance of reading. The CBCA longlisted books will be shared with the students throughout the term and beyond, and we are excited to hear about the literary journeys that will ensue.
