Mathematics in Year 5 the last two weeks has involved reconnecting with our classmates and working cooperatively to solve problems. The real-life problem of stock taking was presented to students, who then engaged eagerly in trying to strategise, count, group, sort and multiply in order to determine how many counters were in the box. All containers said 1000 but we quickly worked out that some had lessless, and some had more. We had to ‘Trust the Count’ and use place value and doubling doubles to refine our strategy of just counting.
Students also used the Spheros to help aid the learning of location outcomes. Using the grid map provided we navigated the town and started to create our own so that we could program the ‘spheros’ and direct them accordingly.
Finally, we used the graphing techniques taught during Remote Teaching and Learning 4.0 in our experiments when learning that ‘Matter Matters’, which explored the states of matter.
