At the end of another rich term at Hume Anglican Grammar, I reflect on the resilience of both staff and students as they have navigated their way through more disruptions to the regular flow of school life.
Of course, we have all become quite adept at transitioning from teaching and learning onsite to offsite. Nevertheless, I congratulate all in the school community for their continued flexibility and support.
As we head into the holiday period, I encourage you to mindfully spend time with your own family and community. We generally understand mindfulness as the practice of being in, and appreciating, the present. Mindful practices – such as prayer, meditation, yoga and other physical activities, breathing exercises, etc. – are well known to aid students (and adults) in focusing their minds, letting go of stresses, relaxing and becoming more self-aware. Importantly, we recognise that the Christian Bible focuses on connecting mindfully with God. In Philippians we learn that:
if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
Thus, mindfulness is one way in which we can connect not only with ourselves, but with our families and with God. So, be mindful these holidays – enjoy a walk in nature, time away from screens, a good book, jigsaw puzzle, yoga and meditation, craft projects, volunteer activity, and the list goes on. I look forward to seeing all students return in Term 3 feeling rested and rejuvenated.
