Year 3 Bike Education - Mt Ridley
On Monday, 10 and Tuesday, 11 October, Year 3 students ventured to Essendon Traffic School to put their learning about bike safety into practice. Students eagerly donned their helmets using the Three 2s Helmet Check to ensure they were fitted securely to protect them while riding. They also checked their bikes according to the ABC Bike Safety checklist they had learned about at school.
Once on their bikes, students had lots of fun navigating the pretend roads, traffic lights, train crossings and shops at the Traffic School, taking care to follow the road rules. While acting as pedestrians, the Year 3s showed they could STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK before crossing the roads safely. It was great to see everyone encouraging each other and negotiating roles and responsibilities.
I learnt how to adjust my helmet so that it was safe. Before we did Bike Safety, I don’t think I was wearing my helmet properly. - Abhay 3A
I liked it when we were riding the bikes on the mini roads at the Traffic School; it felt real. - Niya 3B
I liked how we were all being nice to each other, being safe and giving way to each other on our bikes. - Cassandra 3C
This excursion was definitely a highlight of this term’s Health curriculum and has inspired many students to do more safe bike riding with their families, and practice riding without training wheels!
