Year 3 Camp - Donnybrook
On Wednesday, 22 June Year 3 students set off for their very first three-day YMCA Anglesea Recreation Camp. After double and triple checking that everyone was on board the buses, we set off on our 2-hour drive down to the coast.
Once arriving to camp we were welcomed by the friendly YMCA Staff. With our activity groups announced, we were straight into camp life with the Inverlochy Challenge Adventure Race (a scavenger hunt), this was a great activity for the students to explore the camp (17,000 steps later, as monitored on teachers watches).
It was then time to find out the cabin groups; everyone was on the move again with bags in tow, and the talk of who would be on the top bunk. Once sleeping bags were unrolled and laid out on beds, everyone was looking forward to dinner, Roast Chicken and Vegetables (best roast potatoes ever!), and Apple Crumble for dessert. Off to the gym for night activities of Bush Dancing, where we learnt the ‘Heel n Toe Polka’ and a ‘Traditional Barn Dance’. After a night of dancing, everyone settled into bed with some mindfulness.
Day 2 began with excitement and chatter about the activities ahead of them, a Giant Swing, Vertical Challenge, Skateboarding, Radio Rogaine, Bouldering, Mini Golf, and Gaga Games. With the sun shining the activities were pursued with persistence, resilience, and peer support.
After an active day, dinner was on everyone’s mind; pasta with sauce, garlic bread and ice cream with chocolate topping satisfied the hungry tummies. The ‘Talent Show’ was an activity the students were looking forward to as they had been practising in their free time. With singing, dancing and comedy acts, there was plenty of laughter and fun had by all. With no complaints, everyone was off to bed.
The final morning, with rooms packed up, and luggage taken to the bus area, it was time to complete the final two activities with the same enthusiasm as the day before. After thanking the supportive staff at camp, it was time to get back on the bus and head back to school.
It was wonderful to spend time with each other away from the classroom learning new skills, developing social interactions, team building and working together. We all had a fantastic time on camp and look forward to future camps.
