Year 7 and 8 Book Club
The Year 7 and 8 Book Club has garnered much interest from our avid readers, with 19 students joining this great group. We did not let lockdown deter us from meeting up - opting for virtual Book Club chats.
The first book we are reading is the multi-award-winning book ‘Begin End Begin’ - an Australian anthology of short stories written by a diverse group of highly acclaimed writers. It is a genre-spanning book covering sci-fi, cli-fi, fantasy and realistic fiction, and we are looking forward to having some deep chats about the characters and their journeys.
As we did not have the chance to ensure everyone had a copy of the book before lockdown was announced, we have used our first two sessions to recommend books to each other. Recommendations are so important for building a solid reading practice, as finding the right book leads our learners to devour books, which then leads to higher cognition and emotional intelligence.
There were many great recommendations including ‘Refugee’ by Alan Gratz, ‘The Year the Maps Changed’ by Danielle Binks and the ‘Nevermoor’ series by Jessica Townsend. It is clear that this fantastic group are committed to their reading practice and are reaping the rewards in a myriad of ways.
